Causes and Condition

Chronic fatigue syndrome is not a disease but a characteristic and complex array of symptoms that is defined by persistent fatigue. The symptoms resemble those of flu and viral infections.

The cause or causes of chronic fatigue syndrome is not known. Some experts believe it is lined to infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and or cytomegalovirus (CMV), members of the herpes virus family that also cause mononucleosis and retinal and gastrointestinal infections. This is due to the fact that many people with chronic fatigue syndrome have been found to have high levels of EBV antibodies in their blood, and many date the onset of symptoms to a prolonged bout with a viral infection.  It is suspected to be an immune system problem.

Other causes of chronic fatigue syndrome include anemia, arthritis, chronic mercury positioning from amalgam dental fillings, hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism, infection with Candida and sleep problems.

Fibromyalgia, a muscle disorder that causes muscle weakness and fatigue has been found in many people with chronic fatigue syndrome. Intestinal parasites are also common in people with chronic fatigue. Poor diet, Nutritional deficiencies, allergies, thyroid dysfunction, candida, anemia, and stress all compromise the immune system and can cause chronic fatigue syndrome. A chronic form of glandular fever is also suggested cause for chronic fatigue syndrome. Imbalance in the endocrine system is also known to be a cause of chronic fatigue syndrome.

The major criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome is persistent fatigue that does not resolve with bed rest and severe enough to reduce daily activity by 50 percent for at least 6 months.

Signs and symptoms

The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome include:

  • Aching muscles and joints
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Poor memory
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Low blood pressure
  • Intestinal problems and pain
  • Irritability
  • Environmental sensitivities
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mood swings
  • Muscle spasms
  • Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections
  • Nasal congestion
  • Candidiasis
  • Sensitivity to light and heat
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Night sweats
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen glands
  • Mainly extreme and disabling fatigue

Medical Approach and Treatment


There are several medications that may be used to treat CFS including antidepressants, anti-inflammatory drugs for pain.

Antidepressants are prescribed for excessive sleep. They are often effective and will be activating or stimulating for the patient. Most patients gain energy with these medications. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) medications have been proven to provide significant benefit to chronic fatigue syndrome suffers. As insomnia also occurs frequently antidepressants is given to improve sleep and mood.

Painkillers, asprin, and ibuprofen are used to control inflammation and pain the muscles and joints and to treat headaches. Muscle relaxants are given as treatment for pain and spasms.

The patients who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome are given antispasmodic medications as well as increased amount of dietary fibre or vegetable powder.

Pacing techniques encourages behavioral changes. Patients are advised to set manageable daily activity, exercise goals and balance their activity and rest to avoid possible burnout and worsening symptoms.  Slowly patients who are functioning within their individual limits may then start to gradually increase activity and exercise levels while maintaining pacing methods. The goal is to increase over time the level of routine functioning of the individual.

Nutrition Approach and Treatment


Eat a well balanced diet of 50 percent raw foods and fresh live juices. The diet should consist mostly of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, plus raw nuts, seeds, skinless turkey, and some deep sea fish. These foods supply nutrients that renew energy and build immunity.

Include Acidophilus, and well as yogurt and kefir. Acidophilus helps to keep Candida under control, commonly found in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Consume 8 glasses of water a day, plus fresh vegetable juice. Water flushes out toxins and aids in reducing muscle pain.

Don’t eat shellfish, fried food, junk foods, processed foods; stimulants such as coffee, tea, and soft drinks, and products containing yeasts and white flour such as bread or pasta.

Take chlorophyll in table form or obtain it from the liquid of vegetables, such as green drink from leafy vegetables, or wheatgrass.

Do not smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke. This can make symptoms worst. Do not take aspirin. If a viral infection is present Reye’s syndrome may result.


Get plenty of rest, and make sure that you do not overexert yourself. Moderate exercise may be helpful. Deep breathing exercises are recommended. People with CFS tend to take shallow breaths which can cause sleeping problems.


Chromium polynicotinate aids in controlling hypoglycemia.

Coenzyme Q10 enhances the effectiveness of the immune system, plus Coenzyme A protects the heart and works with coenzyme Q10 and aids in removal of toxic substances from the body.

Malic acid is involved in energy production in many cells of the body, including muscle cells. Needed for sugar metabolism. Deficiency has been linked to CFS.

Magnesium often deficient in people with CFS, magnesium is needed for ATP synthesis.

Manganese influences the metabolic rate by its involvement in endocrine function.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, studies have shown that it increases energy levels and aids in preventing depression.

Vitamin A and Vitamin E are powerful free radical scavengers that protect the cells and enhance immune function to fight viruses.

Vitamin C has a powerful antiviral effect and increases the energy level.


Astragalus and echinecea enhance immune function and are good for cold and flu symptoms.

Fresh black walnut hulls, garlic, gentian root, fresh ginger root, neem leaves, quassia bark, and fresh wormwood all help to rid the body of parasites, a common problem for people with CFS.

Burdock root, dandelion and red clover teas promote healing by cleansing the blood and lymphatic system, as well as enhancing immune function. Combine or alternate between these teas, and drink 4-6 cups daily.

Use golden seal to control infection. At the first signs of a sore throat, take a few drops of alcohol free golden seal extract. Caution: Do not take golden seal daily for more than one week at a time, and do not use during pregnancy.

Ginkgo biloba improves circulation and brain function.

Kava kava, skullcap and valerian root all improve sleep.

Licorice root supports the endocrine system and increases cortisol levels by blocking the action of an enzyme that breaks it down. Adrenal exhaustion leads to low production of sortisol and licorice may prove to be beneficial to CFS sufferers.

Milk thistle protects the Liver, so that it could remove toxics and process lipids.

Olive leaf extract has antibiotic and antiviral properties and helps fight infection.

Pau d’arco, taken in capsule or tea form, is good for treating candida infection which can cause CFS.

St. John’s wort has antiviral properties and is a good antidepressant.
